Op een koude winteravond in januari 1991 klonken vanuit een oud schoollokaal in Groningen de eerste klanken van Clarinets Unlimited. Het orkest, toen nog zonder naam, werd in het leven geroepen door drie fanatieke Groningse klarinettisten. Eén van hen was Johan Bijen, die ook de muzikale leiding op zich nam. De andere twee, Lukas Snieders en Henk Jansen, maken nog steeds deel uit van het orkest.
De naam Clarinets Unlimited geeft de onbeperkte mogelijkheden van de klarinet aan en in de afgelopen tien jaar heeft het klarinetorkest zich in vele (klank-)kleuren gepresenteerd. Elk half jaar werd een nieuw programma gespeeld, uiteenlopend van het allereerste optreden op het avant-garde podium De Salon te Groningen tot een uitvoering van Prokovief’s Peter en de Wolf op diverse plaatsen in de provincie. In Clarinets Unlimited zijn de meeste klarinetsoorten vertegenwoordigd: van de kleine esklarinet tot de grote contrabas. De unieke klank van het ensemble maakt het mogelijk om steeds weer een veelzijdig programma te presenteren.
Johan Bijen droeg het dirigeerstokje over aan achtereenvolgens Henk van Ras en Jos van Lierop. Vanaf 1998 wordt het orkest geleid door Karin Vrieling. Zij studeerde klarinet bij Reinier Hogerheijde aan het Groninger conservatorium en bij Floyd Williams in Brisbane, Australië.

Op zaterdag 3 juli 1993 om 20:30 speelden we o.l.v. Henk van Ras in de Doopsgezinde Kerk, Oude Boteringestraat 33 in Groningen; er werden werken uitgevoerd van o.a. T. Keuris, J. Rivier, B. Bartók, C. Debussy en A. Vivaldi. Naast Clarinets Unlimited speelden Yzebrand de Boer, MSMSM en Kla 4.
